AMPL IDE

Installation Instructions

Our new Integrated Development Environment, AMPL IDE, provides a simple and straightforward enhanced modeling interface for AMPL users. Commands are typed at an AMPL prompt in the usual way, and all installed solvers can be accessed. Advantages include:

  • Integration of the AMPL command and editing windows
  • Syntax highlighting for model and data files
  • Quick links to error locations
  • Consistent appearance and operation across platforms

Version 1.0 of AMPL IDE supports all widely used versions of Windows, Linux, and MacOS. It is easily set up as an extension of any standard AMPL command-line installation — see the download and installation instructions below — after which it is available through the new amplide application. The plain command-line ampl application remains available for batch runs and other special needs.

Access to AMPL IDE is included with all purchases and trials of the AMPL product.

You can update any previously purchased AMPL installation to use AMPL IDE 1.0, provided that your maintenance & support service extends through 31 December 2013 or later. Start AMPL with ampl -v or use the command option version; within AMPL to see the maintenance status of your current AMPL software. Contact us at support@ampl.com if you need a quote for reinstatement of maintenance.

AMPL IDE also works with any trial license, and with any temporary version of AMPL distributed under the AMPL for Courses program.

To get started, follow the instructions below that correspond to your operating system:

These instructions add AMPL IDE to an existing installation of command-line AMPL and solvers. Contact us at support@ampl.com if you need help completing the AMPL or IDE setup.

AMPL IDE is developed in partnership with Optirisk Systems, who offer extended versions for support of stochastic and robust optimization.

Microsoft Windows

Locate the folder on your computer that contains the program file ampl.exe (as well as other AMPL files). This is the “AMPL folder” that will be used for the AMPL IDE installation.

Determine whether you installed a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of AMPL. This information appeared in the name of the installation file that you downloaded, and is also found in the message displayed by the AMPL command “option version;”.

Now download the appropriate AMPL IDE zipfile, by using the primary site or secondary site link below:

Double-click the zipfile icon, or apply an unzip utility, to extract the contents of the zipfile. When the extraction is complete you will see a folder named amplide (possibly inside another folder named amplide.win32 or amplide.win64). Move the amplide folder into your AMPL folder, by dragging or cutting and pasting the amplide folder icon.

Double-click the amplide folder icon to open the folder, and then double-click the amplide.exe file icon to start AMPL IDE. A small “AMPL IDE” window will appear while the program is being loaded, and then the full IDE application window will open.

To get started using AMPL IDE, choose Help Contents from the Help menu at the top of the application window.

Linux

Locate the directory on your computer that contains the executable file ampl (as well as other AMPL files). This is the “AMPL directory” that will be used for the AMPL IDE installation.

Determine whether you installed a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of AMPL. This information appeared in the name of the installation file that you downloaded, and is also found in the message displayed by the AMPL command “option version;”.

Now download the appropriate AMPL IDE package, by using the primary site or secondary site link below:

Extract the contents of the package by typing the command

tar xzf amplide.linux32.tgz     (for 32-bit AMPL)
tar xzf amplide.linux64.tgz     (for 64-bit AMPL)

When the extraction is complete you will see a directory named amplide. Move this amplide directory to your AMPL directory, so that it appears as a subdirectory of your AMPL directory.

Make amplide your current directory, and then start AMPL IDE with the command

    ./amplide

A small “AMPL IDE” window will appear while the program is being loaded, and then the full IDE application window will open.

To get started using AMPL IDE, choose Help Contents from the Help menu at the top of the application window.

Mac OS X

Locate the folder on your computer that contains the icon for the ampl program (as well as other AMPL files). This is the “AMPL folder” that will be used for the AMPL IDE installation.

Now download the AMPL IDE package file, by using the primary site or secondary site link below:

Double-click this file’s icon to extract its contents. When the extraction is complete you will see a folder named amplide. Drag the amplide folder icon into your AMPL folder.

Double-click the amplide folder icon to open the folder, and then double-click the amplide file icon to start AMPL IDE. A small “AMPL IDE” window will appear while the program is being loaded, and then the full IDE application window will open.

If you get a message that the amplide program “can’t be opened” because it “was not downloaded from the Mac App Store” or it “is from an unindentified developer,” then you will need to tell Mac OS X that the program is from a trusted source, by following these steps:

    1. Control-click or right-click the amplide icon.
    2. Select Open from the top of contextual menu that appears.

This step will only be necessary the first time that you open the AMPL IDE. After that you can open it in the usual way, by double-clicking the amplide file icon.

To get started using AMPL IDE, choose Help Contents from the Help menu at the top of the application window.
