• The Mathematical Programming Society publishes a newletter and a journal and holds a triennial international conference, all devoted to optimization topics.

• Harvey Greenberg's Mathematical Programming Glossary contains definitions and commentary on practically any term in optimization that you are likely to encounter.

Centers, departments, and other organizations

• The Bell Labs Computing Science Research Center home page contains information about the corner of Bell Laboratories where AMPL was developed.

• The Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department at Northwestern University has been a key location for design and testing of AMPL.

• The Optimization Technology Center, a joint venture of Argonne National Laboratory and Northwestern University, maintains an extensive Network Enabled Optimization System (NEOS) on the Web. Components include a NEOS Guide to optimization methods, solvers, and test problems, and a NEOS Server that lets you use various solvers over the network.

• The Consortium to Develop an Intelligent Mathematical Programming System is directed by Prof. Harvey Greenberg at the University of Colorado at Denver. This joint industry/academic group addresses issues of decision support for productive use of mathematical programming.

• The INFORMS Computer Science Technical Section is dedicated to the interface of computer science and artificial intelligence with operations research and the management sciences. It organizes a bi-annual meeting, sponsors sessions at INFORMS National Meetings, sponsors the INFORMS Journal on Computing, publishes a newsletter, and awards an annual prize.

Software indexes

• An Optimization Software Guide, containing a page of information on each of over 70 software packages, is based on the book by Moré and Wright, updated for the NEOS Guide to Optimization.

• A Decision Tree for Optimization Software has been constructed by Hans D. Mittelmann of the Department of Mathematics at Arizona State University and P. Spellucci of the Department of Mathematics at the Darmstadt University of Technology. If you can answer a series of questions about your optimization problem, this page will guide you to a list of appropriate software. The covered software is mainly public-domain, and mainly for nonlinear problems.

• An extensive optimization software area is part of the Guide to Available Mathematical Software maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

• A list of optimization software in the public domain is maintained by Jiefeng Xu at the Graduate School of Business Administration of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
